Hello boaters.
I'm about to purchase a boat with, as best as I can tell, a '76 85hp V-4 Johnson motor, but I was wanting to find out how hard it is to find parts for one of these. The man who owns it now says that it runs fine at idle and at half throttle, but when you open it up all the way it bogs down. The boat has sat for a while.
Any info would help.

If it sat for awhile, the carbs. likely needs a cleaning and rebuild kits, as the high speed jets are probably clogged. Parts are readily available for that motor. If you have a Model number, we can tell you for sure what year it is..

On a 1976 85hp parts are available unless it's an electric shift and those parts are like finding hens teeth

do a compresion test before giving him your money.
plenty of part availeble bud pistons are 90 dollars a piece and a rebuild on a 76 is questionable.

good luck

I have the same motor. Does anyone know how I can find the model #? Is it stamped somewhere?

The model number is stamped on what looks like a freeze plug. If it is not there it has been rebuilt.
