Mixing Ratio for an old Evinrude

I've just purchased an old boat with an even older 50 hp 2-stroke Evinrude on it. I expect this to be the first of many posts to this forum.

The guy who sold the motor to me thought it was 1978 or 79. He was pretty good mechanically and had rebuilt the engine over the winter. On the other hand, he wired up the transmission cables backwards so that forward is reverse and vicey versey.

He suggested the correct mix for the motor was 50:1, which seems to me to be pretty lean for an older engine. Can anyone offer me some advice?

If the motor is a 70's model 50 hp the correct fuel mix is 50:1.

Hi Bryan,
If the motor was indeed "rebuilt", .ie new pistons, rings, bearings, etc., then you ought to double up the oil mix for the first couple tanks of fuel (12 gallons or so) until the motor is broken in. Once it's broken in, you can cut it back to 50:1...
- Scott
