I recently purchased a Fourwinns with Johnson 150. It is a 2003 purchased new a few weeks ago. When we took it for a test run. It had problems idling and throttling up. It would die when you gave it gas. Tech contacts Bomb and is told it is a faulty Vacuum Switch. He robs one from another unit and everything looks fine. Now I am back to the same problem. Called Dealer and am told that a batch of Vacum Switches got out of factory with out a bleed hole drilled in them. And that it was possible that the one he robbed was bad also.
Boat is now at another Johnson dealer, as the Fourwinns dealer is four hours away. Haven't heard from them. So I thought I would make a post to see if anyone else had heard of this problem or may have a solution.

Thanks,

George

Very easy to disconnect the switch and run the engine, if engine runs ok, replace switch. Bulletin tells how to id correct switch. He should order the correct switch, and hope it dosent backorder.

LIke Clanton said, but they can just clamp the small fuel line going to the switch and run it! BTW, it's not the vacuum switch!!

Well, let's look into my crystal ball..... HHhhMMmmmmmm! I see... 6, 14,29,42, 45 and the last number is foggy!! So much for winning the lottery! Oh, o-yea, your engine! Don't really know George!. But, the dealer should do a compression check, spark check, sync and link, and run the motor with a different fuel source (a seperate fuel tank and line), shoot fuel down the venturi's , isolating which cylinders are the culprits. It's not the vacuum switch (unless that's letting IN air into the system)! No alarms correct??? Keep us inform'd. I could be wrong!

We've got a 2002 Johnson 150. It was fine until it got about 150 hours on it then it started doing the same thing as yours. My mechanic says he runs into this on occasion and that it need different jets. He has ordered them. I'll let you know what the results are.

I would not want the jets changed without a letter from the BOMB. Engine must comply with fed emission standards. If the jets are any other spec changed from service manual or service bulletin would not be an approved changed, and the poor mechanic that worked on it later, probley would put the standard jets back in, unless the engine is marked.

The fuel restriction switch would only give one beep and turn the red, check engine light on. Engine would most likly drop some rpms and surge, from lack of fuel.

Re: 2003 Johnson 150 Problems.

Well I had a surprise this afternoon. The local Johnson Dealer called me to tell me my boat was ready for pickup, GREAT.

When I got there I was told that they ajusted the throttle cable and something to do with syncing the carbs. But he only had 30mins of work on the ticket and when I got it home I fired it up and it was idling about at about 1100 rpms. This was about 100 over what a the cold engine. Ran before.

I haven't taken it out for a test run but I am really worried all they did was run up the idle speed. I don't see how they even got the engine up to temp in 30 mins.

Maybe I should have more faith in human kind. I will post my findings after I take it out for a test.
