I have a mid 90s 40 HP tiller, electric start, oil injected, this motor is very difficult to start cold in the morning but after it runs for a few minutes it will start all day on the first try and runs smooth and strong.
I dont know if i am doing something wrong or its just quirk with this engine.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Gordh

Re: Evinrude starting problems.

I also am having starting problems this year. My late 80's early 90's Evinrude 200XP takes a long time to start when first started for the day. So long it runs my battery dead. After it has been started once, it will fire right up the rest of the day and run great.

Re: Evinrude starting problems.

when you start the moter after priming the bulp till it is hard turn the key one klik and push in the key for 5 seconds than keep the key pushed in and turn key to start motor.
you might need to lift up the warm up lever just a bid but try it first without.

good luck

Re: Evinrude starting problems.

Thanks for the reply but i dont think that would apply for a tiller model there are no keys or levers.

Thanks

Walleyeman.

Welcome to iboats. :)

It is poor practice to hijack someone's problem with a different one of your own.

Please post your question as a new topic.

Thanks. :)

gordh

You should have a primer system on that motor. I'm not real familiar with the tiller models, but there must be a button or "choke" lever to activate the primer. Others will know..

Re: Evinrude starting problems.

gordh
My 40hp electric remote evinrude has a primer solenoid on the right side of the motor. It has a red lever attached. The manual says to turn lever 180 degree to allow fuel to flow directly into the carbs. This makes for easier starting when engine is cold. After the engine warms up, rotate lever back to running position. Hope this helps.
