Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Welcome!!

You might want to check with your insurance company just for kicks.

It can, and has, been done especially on performance boats. Do you want to use one as a constant pump or simply a primer pump?

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Would like to use one as a primer pump....this motor seems to be vapor locking, or something. Morning runs motor cranks and runs fine.....after boat sits for a while, 20-30 minutes, the motor will not start without pumping bulb again but the bulb never feels like it gets hard. At this point you can EASE the throttle down and get it going, but the throttle has to be feathered or it will bog down and die....this is the third primer bulb we've had on this motor in less than a year !!

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Hummm....I doubt a pump will cure that. No matter how you prime the system, if the motor still boggs the problem is from the bulb back. Will it go once you take off the first time or does it bogg every time?

Is it an OE bulb or some aftermarket?

First runs of the morning it cranks up and runs fine......hammer it and go !!! after the initial run and down time of 20-30 minutes the problem matrializes and the mystery begins !!

What grade fuel? Is it fresh? What spark plugs?

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

QL78YC Champions are the recommended plug gapped at 0.030". 87 octane fresh fuel is also the recommended fuel. Sounds to me that your losing your seal at the fuel pump (vro) when the motor is warm. Let the motor warm up, shut it down, remove the airbox, and pump the bulb continuously and check for leaks. Be sure bulb is facing the correct way (arrow to motor). You also might have a carb float with morning sickness. Next time this happens, try GENTLY tapping the carb bowls with a screwdriver handle and then see if you can pump the bulb up tight.
Good Luck

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Same type plug....same type gas....motor ran fine last year and this spring.....then started this mystery illness. Needle/float thing sounds like a possible culprit....or vapor lock.....no visible fuel leaks. Bulb not getting hard is not a result of fuel passing through it and running out somewhere (ie..leak) unless it is a needle/seat issue and that bowl is never filling up and shutting off the flow .....

Check the anti-siphon valve in the gas tank pickup.

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

I agree. Lets get the right fuel and plugs in that motor so we know where we're at. Sometimes when NGK's are used the motor has been re-jetted. We need to know that too.

I have that same motor and run QL77JC4's in mine.

Let us know how you make out!

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

Dhadley... Why QL77jc4 when QL78YC are called out?
USALLISON... 1996 vro pump not known to be subject to vapor lock, especially after pumping the bulb. The problem lies in the reason why the bulb doesn't get hard when the motor is warm. Find the leak and I bet you found the problem.

angus63 -- the 77's are a tad cooler and I'm not a fan of anything that raises combustion temps. The 78's will work fine.

Re: ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP

I had electric primer pumps on mine when I got it. One failed and I had no way to prime the fuel line. Took em off both motors.
