I have a 97 Evinrude Ocean Pro carbed 225 v6.

When I try to start the engine cold it always starts right up (I always prime the bulb), but will not stay at an idle. I can keep the engine running by disenegaging the gears and giving it more gas.

When I go to put it in gear to drive off it usually dies,,, I restart it, give it gas again and it works fine. As I itially start to plane and give it more gas it jerks like its not getting enough gas or air is in the line, as long as I have someone pump the bulb as I am giving it more throttle it evetually after about 15 seconds starts working fine.

Now the weird part is after this ritual each time I go out the engine runs great, idles great with out any problems at all until the next time I take the boat out.

Can someone please help or have any ideas? I have already replaced the primer bulb and the gas filter. I am having a problem figuring out what it is because it runs so great after this process.

Thanks in advance for the help.
Eric

Have you looked at the fuel pump? Maybe it's got a pin hole and it's losing the prime that way.

I have not look at the fuel pump. I will take a look at it. Maybe there is a pine hole in the diaphram or fuel line. I am just trying to get some ideas together.

If there was a pin hole would that cause it to leak gas or suck air in?

After reading the board this is what I have come up with to check. If any one else can think of something please let me know.

Pin Hole / Air Leak in Fuel Lines or Fuel Pump Diaphram.
Antisyphon valve
O-Rings in fuel connectors

Does anyone think this could be a carb problem?

Have you drained the fuel filter? Did you check all carbs to make sure the fuel lines are on good and tight? Sounds like a fuel line problem? Here is a way to find out if its a bad fuel or possible fuel line problen, get a portable tank, and hook it up,make sure you add oil to the gas mix,run it and see if this solves your problem,if so,start looking at the fuel line or filters.

I just replaced the fuel filter and checked for water and everything looked good. I will check the fuel line and carb lines when I go down this weekend. That is a good idea to hook up a seperate portable tank. That will help me narrow down the problem.
Thanks

Yup, try a seperate tank.

One other thing is the pick up tube in the fuel tank could be partially plugged.

Also make sure the vent tube is clear.

I will check the vent tube also. I thought about the pickup tube being blocked or maybe the antisyphon valve, but it runs so well after at WOT. Its just in the monring at when I first start it up, it just will not stay at a idle, until I drive it and pump the bulb. Almost like there is air in the line and once the air gets out it works fine...
Thanks for the help.
