Hello,

I have learned quite a bit from these forums over the last few years by just reading over the great feedback given on various topics. I'm now involved in a older motor that I need help on.

I was in the process of re-sealing a lower unit on a 81 Johnson 15HP. I've done similar LU seals and such before so the process is not entirely new.

My problems are two fold, one being that I cannot get the upper drive shaft bearing out using a slide hammer, even with a little heat. Any clever ideas or tricks? I'm at the point of a dremel tool to cut it out, but hopefully someone has an idea.

My second issue is that I found the clutch dog to be cracked completly through on one side. The gears and dog look brand new with no signs of wear or rounding. Not even shiny spots on the dog ears. Can I get a clutch dog without a gear set on these motors? Since I paid $100 for the motor, I would like to get one as "inexpensive" as possible.

Thanks for the help - (Past and future).

Steve

Re: '81 Johnson 15 Lower Unit Help

I got it all back together, only to find I have no neutral. I took it apart and after an hour figured out the new clutch dog has the detent slot/groove milled offset (about .1") where my old dog had the detent dead center. Can anyone tell me what part number I should be looking for? I don't know if this is for a different model, year, etc. or whether it's just made wrong. It's identical in outside dimensions with the only difference being the inner detent groove location.

1981 Johnson 15hp Model J15CES

Thanks

The "CE" in your model number would indicate
that your motor is a 1989. OMC used the word
"INTRODUCES" for production years. I=1, N=2, and so
on. The last letter "s" in your model number is not
a part of the year. I believe it indicates a month
or other run production change.
Just passing this along from someone who filled me in a few years ago.
Could be that you have the wrong part.

Sorry I mis-typed, it's a J15CIS, not CES.

Thanks for helping.
