I recently got this motor from a friend and it had been sitting up for about a year. I took the carb off and soaked as well as took the fuel pump apart (bad mistake). The motor will crank and run rough for about 10 seconds at w.o.t. then it catches, revs up and dies. I have primed the fuel system, cranked the motor and taken the fuel line loose at the pump going to the carb and no gas is coming thru at the pump. Should there be? Also after the motor dies, the primer bulb is spongy. Do I need carb work or new fuel pump? The model# is 5402B (any help with year model is needed also). Sorry for the long post, And thanks guys!

Well, my bet is that you're going to need a fuel pump rebuild kit or a new pump if you don't want to be bothered rebuilding the old one. Remove the fuel line at the carb, pull rope, if gas squirts from the hose, the pump is working, if not, bad pump. Work on the fuel pump first then the carb.<br /><br />Will the motor run if you pump the primer and continue to apply pressure to the bulb?? Pumping the bulb takes the place of the fuel pump.

Evinrude model 5402<br />Year 1964<br />HP 5.5<br />WOT RPMS 4000<br />Displacement 8.84 cu.in. = 144.8 ccm<br />Cylinders 2<br />Weight 57 lbs. = 25.9 Kg<br />Gearcase ratio 15:26<br />Fuel/oil mix 50:1 - I don't know so much about this one. The 5.5hp was discontinued this year, which is also the same year they changed to 50:1. You might want to consider running this particuliar engine a little richer. The 1963 5.5hp required 24:1.<br />Spark plugs Champion J6C gapped at .030"<br /><br />Fuel pump part number 388685 from Bombardier dealer or here. <br /><br />Aftermarket pump 18-7350 should work as well. Aftermarket pump repair kit 18-7823 may work, I'm not sure. Iboats sells these, as does NAPA autoparts stores.<br /><br />Good luck!

Thanks Paul, so we're pretty sure that the fuel pump is the problem?

Re: Help with 6hp Evinrude!

It's either that or the pump is sucking air in at one of the connections, and your pumping is preventing that. Ideally, you would put a peice of clear fuel line between the carb and the fuel pump and check for bubbles. A careful inspection of the ends and hose clamps may also suffice.<br /><br />Actually, that's pretty darn unlikely though. You're describing a non-functional fuel pump exactly.

Re: Help with 6hp Evinrude!

Alright, I'm at my wits end, Please Help! I got the fuel pump rebuilt and it is working fine. Now the throttle has to be wide open for the motor to start and it is very sluggish. The rpm's never increase and the motor eventually dies after about a minute. A day earlier with a non functional fuel pump, the motor ran like a champ by pumping the primer bulb. Now I'm guessing carb problems? Any suggestions are appreciated!
