Keep burning coils on '66 Johnson 80 HP

After burning 3 (thankfully used) coils on my recently purchased older boat I'm finding out the person that owned the boat before me could've wired the coil as for a newer type motor instead of a magneto type. I believe there is more than one wire at the coil. Does anyone know how many and which wire I should have at the coil (to and from)? By the way I'm dealing with a Johnson 80 horse Model # V4SL-18C. Thanks

The V/4 Magneto used on the older Evinrude/Johnson outboards SHOULD NOT have any battery voltage applied to it. To do so will destroy the coil.

There is but one connection to the magneto, and that is for the kill circuit.

From the magneto connection: A black wire leads from that small nut connection on the magneto to one of the "M" (magneto) terminals of the ignition switch. Another black wire connects to the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch and connects to a ground. That's it.

In the second to the last sentence you stated "Another wire connects to the other "M" terminal of the ignition switch and connects to the ground." Can you please tell me where the "another wire" comes from? Are you saying the other black wire connection is from the "M" on the ignition switch to a ground or is the magneto involved for this second black wire? Thanks. Also, I wanted to say that it's very refreshing to ask a question and have an unquestionably experienced person give me an answer without being a smart alleck or wanting something in return. To share a lifetime of knowledge with others selflessly is truly a noble and generous thing to do, especially in todays young person-non-thanking world. Again, thanks for the help.

Re: Keep burning coils on '66 Johnson 80 HP

My 1965 75hp Johnson had an external resistor wire for the coil. The wire is candy stripped and easy to see. If that wire isn't connected (or if bad)to the coil the coil will fry itself. Been there and done it. My wire was bad and the coil did a meltdown. I ended up changing the original $80 coil to a $20 automotive coil with internal resistor and left the resistor wire off. It worked great and ran for years.

Joe's probably off fishin' or some such so I'll try and answer. The second black wire is not involved with the magneto. It just goes to ground. If you've got more questions, just post back.

c/6
Hooty

........and the other black wire, the one for the kill cicuit, where does that one come from and go to? I just bought a manual off ebay but the wiring diagram is a little too schematic for this guy. Thanks for all the help fellas.

There are two "M" terminals on the switch. The black wire from the magneto goes to one of them, A black wire from ground connects to the other. When the switch is turned "Off", power from the magneto is sent to ground through the two "M" terminals.

c/6
Hooty
