We almost rented one to cruise the intracoastal last month when we were in Pompano beach on vacay. Then we saw that the water taxi service was only $5 per person for the whole day,so we went the chauffered route for $10 and cruised the entire day with lunch and cocktail stops in between.Sure beats the $150 per day for the rental.Charlie

Re: With gas prices on the rise...

If gas prices had risen like milk prices, we'd be paying 10.00 + per gallon now. Do the math. I have heard that people cancel vacations due to the cost of gas on a trip that would end up costing about 60.00 more. C'mon. If that stops a vacation, you might need to perform a lifestyle reconciliation. I know that there is a bit of whimsey to Ed F's post but perhaps a bit of truth as well. Maybe we should scale our thinking down a bit. I know this contradicts the above but I live in 3000 sq. ft. of floor space and would probably survive just as long in a pup tent provided access to electricity, sanitary sewer, and clean drinking water. I do however like the roof better. Hmmmmmmm.
Tim

Re: With gas prices on the rise...

tabbot, I'm with you. People always wistfully remember when gas was 25 cents a gallon but conveniently forget that they were making $1.00 per hour at the time.

Do some quick math: What percent of your hourly wage does gas cost now VS then? You may be surprised.

In many areas, gas is actually cheaper now than it was way back when.

Just add one of them 100HP 4 stroke outboards and there you go--a hybrid boat! You may need a few more modifications before being able to ski behind it.

Fortunatly I can enjoy boating moving or idle. I will do a lot of drifting considering the distance I drive to be in the open waters. The prices won't go down, nor will my desire to boat.

Neil.M.W
Is this 4 pounds for a gallon of gas?
At todays exchange rate of $1.923 to 1.00 US, are you paying $7.69 for 4 liters of gas, which is a little more than a US gallon?

Re: With gas prices on the rise...

During my military years (retired in 1990) I spent a 2 year tour in Japan from 1984 - 1986; we were paying over $2 a gallon over there back then. Yeh, I would love for gas to be back below $1 a gallon, but I also don't want my paycheck to be what it was back then. I will adapt and I will put gas in my boat, like I told my wife, we can budget all you want too, as long as it doesn't affect my on the water time.

Sold a couple. Good on ponds, worthless on anything that produces waves. Top speed is about 3mph, so don't be in a hurry to get Grandma to the ramp to use the facilities.

Re: With gas prices on the rise...

My 225 carbed Yamaha will never be accused of being good on gas, and the few times a Summer I have to write a $100+ check to the gas dock always seems depressing, but if I dumped the boat and went on real vacations (hotels, planes, etc), I'd be spending a *lot* more.

Ed F
Sorry for getting off your intended topic. I was mainly responding to your topic heading. I have recently heard so many people commenting about rising fuel costs that I felt compelled to make mention a few of my thoughts concerning the cost of gas and inflation. I'll try to keep to boating (which I truly love) as much as possible in the future and share my economic opinions on a political discussion forum.
Resume the boat discussion!!!! (and sorry for the intrusion)
tabbott

Neat idea, electric power. But not really practical. Cant do much in bad headwind or worse, tide against you. My personal experience with batteries has been expensive at replacement(there is no such thing as a free electron),and the things run out of amps at the most inconvenient times. Heavy , lots of weight, little energy per pound. Really now, gas is still cheap. And packed with lotts and lotts of power per pound. Cheaper than beer even, forget about that milk comparison. Be happy, life is good, and spring is coming (I hope anyways). Batavier

Thats it, and hurts every time I fill her up......its seems to be a growing trend now to convert to LPG which is half the price.
