Re: Rectifier-Regulator

Hi Mike, any components will fail over time. Rectifies are always fried when you touch the battery leads backwards for just 1/10 of a second!
This is the most common cause of failure. Before putting a new one in I would check for any shorts or high voltage from the stator as a precausion.
steve

It "seems" burned out? Is it or not? Does the tach still work?

Regardless, lose the wing nuts on the battery if you still have them.

Low water pressure can contribute to its demise also.

Can you please explain this, Dhadley? I will hopefully be resuming work on my '89 150XP ignition (the old intermittent spark loss problem) soon, and would like to minimize my chances of destroying any of my new components out of my own ignorance. Thanks a bunch!

Re: Rectifier-Regulator

Low water pressure can result in the block not being filled to the top with water interanly. If there isnt water at the top of the block, the water cooled regulator/rectifier can overheat and fail.

Its also possible that if the thermostats are removed that the water can escape fast enough that the block doesnt get filled.

The blocks can sometimes not vent properly internaly and trap air at the top. This can also cause the reg/rec to overheat.

Anytime we see a water cooled reg/rec burned we automatically vent the block externaly. Do a search on block venting for the details on how to do it. Very simple and easy. Cheap too.

I will do that (the search). I figured it had to do with overheating. Thanks again for the information!

Dhadley- just thought you would like to know just went out and looked at motor to see how to vent out top-- already done- looks like factory job.

Great! Make sure the vent is above the number 1 cylinder. Thats the highest point for the cooling system.

Good luck!

Re: Rectifier-Regulator

yep! the vent is above number 1 cylinder, factory must have seen the cooling problem. Any idea on how to check stator?? I assume you use a volt meter.. Guess I should probably order service manual.

Re: Rectifier-Regulator

Another very good idea! The manual will quickly pay for itself. If the tach works, most likely the reg/rec is OK but testing is the way to know for sure.

Re: Rectifier-Regulator

forgot to say in my other post.. reg/rec is for sure fried, started smoking while coming across lake, quick unhooked battery-- when tried to hook back up could tell there was a dead short--big hole burned in rec/reg.. thats why was wondering if something could short it out!!
