71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

Hello all

I have a 1971 9.5hp Johnson, model number 9r-71r that has sat around a couple of years. I cleaned up the carb and got it started. I checked to see if the water pump was doing it's job but for the life of me, I couldn't find where the water comes out in this motor. I've heard someone call this a squat motor because of the shape of the motor and the short shaft. It doesn't have the standard outlet port for water that other Johnson's have. Can anyone tell me where to look to see where the water discharge is? I don't want to change the water pump if it isn't necessary.

Thanks

You should have two relief holes on the back top of the lower that spray out the water. If it's been 2 years and it sat for 2 years, there is no doubt you need to replace it, as they become brittle and will not pump properly. if at all. Very easy on your motor..

Re: 71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

The 9.5s have one exhaust relief hole on the port side, rear, where you should get some water coming out with exhaust.. If you pull the top cowling off you'll see where it is, as there's an accordian-like black rubber boot that runs from the motor to the lower cowling. If you're not getting any water out of there after 30-45 seconds or so, shut it down and address the waterpump system....
- Scott

keep in mind that since you have no"tell tale pee hole" and simply just the relief ports, you wont see much water if its run on muffs. you should see much more water coming ou these holes if you submerge it in a bucket or a barrel, thus producing more pressure, hence the term "reliefe ports" the releive the pressure from the exhaust..... but none the less... get a waterpump and a manual

m ikey

Re: 71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

Hey Chinewalker, you described exactly what I have. I had it running in a 50 gallong barrel for about 1 minute and I did notice that port you discribe and I know nothing was coming out. But since this is a little different than what I see on other outboards, I wasn't sure what was suppose to come out that port. So it looks like a little work for me.

Thanks for the replies

Re: 71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

Hi Radar,
Was the water level above the bulge where the gearfoot attaches to the exhaust housing? Those pumps have a tough time priming if the water level in the barrel is too low.
I would check your local library for a service manual for your motor. Or, if you prefer to have your own, check the links below on iboats for manuals...
- Scott

check ebay for a factory service manual. u should have water and exhaust splattering out of that hole u will not get a solid stream of water from these motors. if it was mine i would change the water pump and thermostat just to be on the safe side. total should only cost u about 25$ if u change it yourself. the parts are still avalable at any JOHNSON EVINRUDE DEALER. these are great little motors pretty simple but u will need a manual because there are a few little things on the throttle timing on these motors that u will need to know about.

I believe the water level in my barrel was well above the point you described. I can run it briefly again to make sure. I do have a manual. A Seloc for the years covering my motor. But I'm not sure about the thermostat that wayne talks about. I didn't think there was one on this type of motor. Where would it be located?

All 9.5s have a thermostat.
If you look down at the head where the spark plugs screw in, you'll see three screws holding a circular/triangular plate on. The thermostat is underneath that plate.
My Seloc manual devotes about 1 paragraph to the themostat in the whole book!

Good luck!

carfull with the thermostat cover u are sure to brake it. they brake very easy.dont pry on the sides with the bolt holes.use a small chisel or a flat screw driver and bang from left to right working both sides of the thermostat cover to get it off.BE VERY CARFUL. seloc are OK manuals but they cover way to many motors nad will not tell u all the little things about that motor that u need to know to make it run right.

Thanks for the tip wayne. But how does one know when the thermostat goes bad?

Re: 71 Johnson 9.5hp water pump question

Middleground
is right.
i replace my water pump every 2 seasons and my thermostat every 6 but i check it when i change my waterpump just to make sure it opens at the right temps. u do this by boiling water on the stove with the thermostat and a thermometer in the water.its pretty easy but most people think its just easyer to buy a new 1 and be done with it,especially if u just bought the motor, u might wanna go though the whole tune up prosses and know what u have and when it was all done. peice of mind i guess. thats what i do when i get used stuff but i am vary anal about that kinda stuff.
