Champions only. I would use (Q)L77JC4's.

Good luck!

Re: spark plugs

Why are champions preferred for evinrude and johnson? What would be the difference if you used NGK or something else? I use champions just because that is what the manual preferred, but never inquired as to why.

Re: spark plugs

The carbd E/J's are calibrated around the heat range and characteristics of the Champion plug. Just like most Yamahas and Mercs are built around the NGK's.

Many times even though plugs cross over on a chart the heat range is not EXACTLY the same.

Re: spark plugs

Seeing as this is a spark plug thread can I add to it instead of starting another one, I don't mean to muscle in on someone else's thread!
Can anyone tell me what plugs I should use in my Johnson FD-12? The manual says J4J, but when I bought it it had J6Js in it and that's what the label on the top of the engine says, or Auto-Lite A3X.
It's only had a short test run on the J6Js to confirm it ran when I bought it, but for long term use what should I be using?

Re: spark plugs

Where does that recommendation come from Rick? That's yet another one to add to the list and I still don't know which is "right", will any of them make much difference?

Re: spark plugs

Can I get into the mix too :) What would the ideal plugs be for a 1956 evinrude 15hp? It currently has Champion J6C's gapped to .030. I'm in the middle of rebuilding the complete power head for this motor, and would like to get everything as close to right the first time cause I'm a lazy sob :D Thanks in advance everyone. :)
