I have an '81 Evinrude 75hp. Last year, once in a while, the power trim & tilt wouldn't work. Now, it's not working at all.

I'm pretty sure it's electric, but I'm not positive as to what part.

When I push UP, there is just a click. When I push DOWN, there is nothing.

Could this be the selonoid? Or, maybe just a loose wire?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Patrick

check your relays under the motor cover, follow the wires from your tnt motor up under the motor cover there should be a black box on the back of the motor and thats where the relays are, good luck

Thanks for your help, red10. I'm going to try the relays tonight. Should I just clean up the connections? Or, is there a way to check them?

you could use a meter to test the ammount of voltage.

i would check your battery connections first though... if that system's wires are coroded at all, get out the wire brush and file that crap off!

I had the same thing happen about a month ago. Mine was the solenoid in the junction box. If you need one quick. Some auto parts houses carry marine parts. I found mine at Orielly's. Borg Warner part number S5051 worked on mine. Hopefully its just connections though.

Check the ground on the solonoid first if it's loose or corroded the trim won't work, then make sure you are gettine fire to the small post on the solonoid but i guess you are if it will click, get some one to operate the switch and see if you are getting fire through the solonoid, if you are then see if the fire is getting to the tnt motor.

First of all tell us what you have before you drive yourself crazy looking for something you dont have.

The original electric motor for your unit was a 3 wire motor. That uses a solenoid mounted in a box somewhere in the boat. It could be under the hood without the box but unlikely.

Its not unusual to convert the old units to the newer 2 wire reversing motor which use 2 square relays to operate.

Good luck!

I followed all the wires & the solenoid was in a box in the boat. Everything there looked good, so I kept going. I found a 3-wire plug that was in really rough shape. I took it apart & cleaned all the connections. It goes up and down now.

Thanks for all the input!

Patrick
