Howdy, Frustrated.

I feel your pain. The diagram does show up in earlier Johnson Manuals, but not in some aftermarket manuals. I don't have one that covers the '86 engine, but I think it is the same as many smaller OMC engines of the period.

If you don't have one, I suggest the Factory Service Manual or your local library might have one that you can legally make copies from.

Good luck. :)

Thanks. It may not be the fuel pump - engine loses power and will stall unless choke is full on. I am looking for air leaks. Any way to remove / inspect the venturi tube in the carb? Maybe that is plugged. The motor does idle nice though.

The motor will not idle very good if there is an air leak or the fuel pump is bad. I would start with cleaning the carb, and pulling the big screw out of the fuel pump and cleaning the metal screen.

I did try that - engine wouldn't run at all after winter storage - so I got new fuel, and plugs, removed the carb, dissassembled and cleaned it all (no signs of any gummy stuff) dissassembled and reassembled the fuel pump, replaced lines and bulb to tank. Now it will start and idle well - but will only accelerate beyond that on the boat if the choke is fully out. Otherwise it will slow down and stall.
Compression and spark all good. Thanks for any ideas you may come up with.

Frustrated....Will pumping the primer ball keep it running? If so, may still be a problem in the fuel pump. Also, I would redo the carb with a new rebuild kit, OEM preferred. When cleaning the carb, blow all passages out with carb cleaner and follow up with compressed air.

Keep us posted....thanks.

Thanks for the ideas - I will try them out this weekend and let you know how it goes (or doesn't go).
