Johnson 25 hp? Numbers?

I know nothing of this outboard, which I recently purchased, other then I was told was a Johnson 25HP. My nephew came out to see if her could get it to start, but the pull rope won't pull. At first he thought it was froze up, but the prop turns and it seems to shift into gears ok. The previous owner had painted it green and a little black with a paint brush to camoflauge it and use on his duck boat. On the hood, there are holes on both sides where metal names and designs had once been and those areas have the original color of white visible. On the right hand side of the transom mount, there is a place where there must have been a tag at one time. All that remains is a white spot and two opposing holes where the keepers had once been. I assume this is where the identification tag was located. The only number we can find is on a soft plug near the cylinder head. It has the seahorse emblem and the number 2157104 stamped on it. Any and all ideas and information of how we can find what HP, year, etc., would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You!

Re: Johnson 25 hp? Numbers?

Hi ya' DaNorski....welcome aboard!

Well...the number dosen't do much. It's probably the serial number which also dosen't help.

However...when trying to pull the rope, make sure it's in neutral and the tiller handle isn't all the way into WOT. But for now....that's about it. Can you tell us about the engine....is the gear case split or one piece, is there a power pack or just spark plug wires coming from under the flywheel. If it has a power pack, see if there is a number on it. Maybe we can get close at least.

Thanks.

That serial number points towards the early sixties to me. There were no 25hp engines made then though. There were 28hp engines in '62-'64, but they had their nameplates on top of the transom clamp. But the 18hp engines made then had theirs on the side of the top of the transom mount.
Are there three holes in the top front corner of the hood, where a decoration went on each side of the engine? That would suggest '61 to '63.

Hello,
I made sure that my nephew had the engine in neutral when he pulled the start rope. It still won't budge, just makes a clank clunk sound when the rope moves out a couple of inches then stops abruptly. About two-thirds 2/3rds of the way down the engine gear shaft case, it has a place where it divides and the very lower section looks to be removable. The spark plug wires come from under the flywheel. As for the holes in the engine hood, there are three larger holes in a line just above and parallel to the bottom of the hood where I assume the Johnson name was located. Then there are three smaller holes above in the upper forward portion of the hood where the Seahorse insignia emblem had been. This is duplicated on both sides of the hood. Thank You!
