Hi all,

As you have figgured out I have a 1987 evenrude 40hp. It, to say the least has been a thorn in my side.

After servral costly vro problems, we tried to start it for this season, no go. We took it to our trusted boat repairmen who, because of the vro pump, we know quiet well. It turns out that the previous tech. installed the coil packs backwards. That problem solved they put it in the "tank" where it was found that the discharge water was to hot. He suggested that the water pump be replaced to the tune of $150. We bought the impeller for $20 and are attempting to do it ourselves.

The lower unit is all unbolted but we can not for the life of us determine how the shifting rod disconnects. Does it disconnects at the top by the motor or by the lower unit? Help please!

The shift rod disconnects up by the motor. Remove the shift lever retaining pin. Push shift lever toward the powerhead. To disengage shift lever from shift rod.

Torka, if you want to save money on outboard service and repairs, the most inexpencive tool you can purchess is a manual.
