I've just replaced the water pump on my 58 Super Seahorse 35hp RDSL 20. That went well and I'm planning to install the lower unit next. I noticed that the screen over the water intake is clogged looking, so I decided to remove and clean it. There's only one problem ... I see no way to remove it. lol Does it pry out maybe?
Thanks
Tom

If you look at the end of the exhaust/water intake, you'll see a soft core plug. You remove that plug to get at the screen, which is rolled inside there. I have no idea if replacement plugs are available, so look in to that first.
You might want to consider picking away at it with a toothpick instead.
Good luck!

Yikes! I removed the exhaust water intake screen and I see the hole that the other intake screen inserts into ... but there is no plug. That's bad... right?
Tom

Just to make sure we're on the same page here, here's a picture of a lower unit (not yours, this is from the mid-hp engines but the intake is pretty well the same).
26 is the screen I was talking about, and 27 is it's plug. Is this what's missing?
By exhaust water intake do you mean 32?

If the plug is missing, then large bits of crud could conceivably be sucked up the intake and cause a clog somewhere more critical. Find something to bung it up with, perhaps a rubber cork or something.

Yes, I meant 32. Is that meant to be open to the water intake?

I didn't see 27 at all on this motor, but I just scraped the paint there and I've found a metal plug. I think its time to find a toothpick. lol Hmmm.. if the screen is rolled, I wonder if I can spin it around a little and possibly find a clean side?
Thanks Paul
Tom

Yes - it's part of the pump intake system. I think the holes in the cover are ment to bleed off water shoved into the intake by the prop.
I think it would be a minor miracle to get that screen to spin from the outside. 50 years of paint and corrosion between the stainless and aluminum are holding it there.
Sounds like all is well besides though.

Yep ... The bottom of the screen is loose but it's not going to spin. I'll just do my best to clean it up and keep my eyes open for a new plug. That looks simple to change even with the motor on the boat.

Everything is going well on this motor so far. It can't have too many hours on it for being as old as it is. I'm anxious to hear it run again.

Thanks for the advice as always and I hope I don't make admiral by the time I get this one in the water. lol
Tom

Re: 58 superseahorse intake screen

The screen on my motor was pretty badly clogged, mostly on the inside from where a previous owner had give the whole lower unit a coat of thick silver paint, including the screen.
I drilled a hole in the aluminium plug and cleaned the inside of the screen with a wire bottle brush, then plugged the hole with a s/s self tapping screw.
It could be useful if I ever need to use a hose to flush the engine, just take the screw out and plug in the hose.
