Hi all

Im sure you have all been asked this before, I am Julie from Australia and I have just acquired Uncles boat that has really stiff steering, its and evinrude V4 90hp 1985 model built in Australia. I can see that the steering cable goes in to the motor with a large nut on the right side of the motor if looking at it from standing on the ground at the back of the boat, then it goes through the tube looking thing and there is a steel tube coming out the other side with a nut and bolt on the end that connects to another steel rod that goes back to the centre area of the motor.

I have undone the nut at the end of the cable and tried to pull the rod out but no go, can someone explain to me what to do in Simple english (for a girl haha) and maybe anyone has pictures or diagrams??

Many Thanks in Advance Julie

Welcome to iboats, Julie.

You might have to beat it out with a hammer. Twisting it with a visegrip may help, too. On most boats there isn't enough clearance to be able to get it all the way out without unbolting the motor and hanging it to get you the clearance. If it won't come out without hammering it, you might be able to shoot some penetrating oil and get it to loosen. If it does, you might not need a new cable. Sometimes things corrode or the grease dries up and turns to glue. If you can easily turn the steering wheel with that big nut loosened, the cable itself might be okay.

minichick...did you remove the bolt that connects the steering link, thats the steel rod that connects the motor to the steel tube coming out the other side, and pull the steering link out of the steel tube? The steel tube coming out the other side opposite of the large nut you removed is called the steering cable ram. WillyB is correct in that sometimes, more often than not, the engine needs to be lifted from the transom in order to get the steering cable out of the tilt tube......thats' the large tube on the motor the steering cable goes through. Unless you have a very wide transom, you may have to do this.

Be careful of hammering on the steering cable ram. This can easily "mushroom" the end and make it more difficult to pull out of the tilt tube. If you can still move the steering wheel, the cable should pull from the tilt tube.

Keep us posted if you run into trouble...thanks.

Hi all

I tried again this morning there is alot of black gunk coming out of the tube, i removed the bolt that connects the steering link and took that out of the hole, now are you saying that i should be hammering that part with the hole in it so it goes through the tube to he other side?

I tried pulling the steering cable out from the side that it goes up to the stering wheel at the front but it pulls a fair way out and then starts pulling the tube through that had the bolt and steering link connected to it.

I am at a loss, dont want to break it, feel stupid but some help would be good Please !!

You're OK, keep pulling.

You have two parts. 1. The cable. 2. The sheath that rides over the cable.

The link arm was attached to the sheath.

Trying to help is a sickness.

The part in question is called a tilt tube. It's not always an easy project to get them out.

Usually, you can clean them up. Scrape as much junk out of there as you can. Then, use a brass or stainless brush (that will go inside the tube)mounted to a drill motor. That should clean up the inside nicely.

Lubricate heavily with a marine grease and reinsert the cable and tighten. With a constant attention to lubrication, the cable/tilt tube should be fine.
