engine stops

I have a 1987 evinrude 150hp, when I start the engine I have to press in on the kill switch, been having to do this for some reason. Now when I start the motor, it runs for 2 to 5 sec's and drives, it seems all electricity stops, if I hold the kill switch in it keeps running. Anyone know what would be causing the electricity to stop or short.

Let me try to rephrase this, I start the motor, it turns right over just fine, runs for 5 seconds or less and just dies. If I press in the the kill switch it keeps running, the 2 seconds after I let go it dies immediately, seems like the electricity completely stops, trys to run but then dies off.

There is supposed to ba a little plastic clip that snaps on to the kill switch. Its tied to a lanyard and you hook the lanyard to yourselfd. Its a safety feature in case you get throw overboard while running the boat. The engine will stop if that happens.

Walker, yes the little plastic clip is in place, is it possible for this clip to wear out from being pressed inward to start the motor, which fires good, but after letting off, it dies out within seconds. Im hoping this is all it is, and why I have to press it in to get the engine to fire, which in previous years I've never had to do.

Never seen the clip wear out but its not unheard of for the switch itself to go bad. You need to do some more testing though. If you have the type switch that incorporates ignition switch, choke, and safety switch its possible that you are choking the engine to keep it running. Usually if its the safety circuit the motor will die instantly when you release the key. Might want to check for spark while cranking but not pushing in on the switch.

Walker this may seem the cheapest fix in the world, but I thought about it, cut to small pieces of the boarding for a battery package off the back, placed it between the kill button and pussh the switched back on, it started immediately and kept running, so I guess those little switch guys can only be pushed in so many times before the button doesnt stay in far enough when you start the motor, but thanks for the assistance
