hero,

No response at all? Or, nothing you can hear?

First off, remove and clean every connection under the cowl. Pay special attention to the negative lead on the engine block. Don't just look at it, remove it and clean it.

Re: johnson 115 hp 1976 key problems

I have seen on numerous occasions auto starters
that have a dead spot , if it happens to stop
in just the right (or wrong ) spot it will not
function. Not sure if this can happen on this starter but may be worth considering. When this
has happened to me a quick rap from a rubber mallet will sometimes jog it just enough to start.

Hero have you checked the switch itself. If your set up is like mine the key is in the control box. Here are the steps if it is. You will need a test light or meter.

1. disconnect battery
2. key in off postion. connect test light/meter between Batt and A terminal.Should not show continuity
3. Key on light should show continuity
4.key to start position. should show continuity
5.key held in start position.transfer from a to S should have continuity.
6.transfer leads to m terminals. should NOT have continuity in start and on position.
7.Off position should show continuity.
8.transfer to b and c terminal. key on position and push key in. should show continuity
9.turn key to start and push in. should show contiunity with key in.

May not be your switch but just a thought.

Follow DJ and Richards advise. Also check neutral safety switch in control box.
