I have a 1976 55hp Evenrude. It has me dumfounded as to why it will lose its spark. I had it in the shop and they got it running but told me they had not seen a problem like this in 15 years. It seems that if you remove the plugs and crank the engine it will produce spark. If you put the plugs back in you get no spark. The shop said that it needs to crank faster to spark when the plugs are in, so make sure I have a fully charged battery. So I have 2 batteries in series hooked up. Sure as heck it has died again with the same problem. Has anybody ran into such a problem and was able to find out the cause of this.

Sounds like a weak charge coil in the stator toolman. Did the wrench check the cranking output of the coil? Standard test. Should tell you what ya' need to know.

Be careful doubling up on cranking amps. Good way to take out a starter.

OBJ I'll check with the wrench if he did or not check the output of the coil. I think the charge coil in this make and year is part of the stator itself if I am thinking correct. I am not sure if it is. I'll heed your advise on the cranking amps. I do not need another problem then the one I already have.

I had the same issue with my 1976 9.9. I replaced the driver coil under the flywheel and the problem was solved.

See my post "1976 johnson 135 Hp. Exact problem. After spending a small fortune was fixed with a piece of sandpaper. A lot of people including myself do not beleive it but I did it and it is still running. Can not hurt a thing.

GC, It sounds just like the troubles I am having with my boat. I charged my battery and am going to check my battery cables tonight. I am going to clean all battery cables and connections to the starter so that I hopefully achieve 300 rpm to cause spark to the plugs. If that fails I with pull the stator cover and try to clean the stator as you have. Is it not fun owning a boat. I think I work on it more then I us it.

Life was so much easier when I had a jet boat, that had a ford 460 and it was sure alot easier to know what needed to be fixed if there was a problem.

Thanks for everyones help.
They say you learn something new every day.

How did you add the other battery???? I hope you meant to say parallel, because if you hooked them up in series, you doubled the voltage, not the cranking amps. This could do some real damage....

Toolman, a lot of people have told me I am nuts and that should not have fixed my problem, but I saw and beleived. I also am in awe. Many have told me how sensitive they are to the magnetic charge. By the way it is still starting just fine a week after the fix. I AM A BELEIVER. Good luck

GC, Well I am going to have to give your sandpaper fix a try. I cleaned the batteries, cables, connections and got the boat to run. I took it out that day and it ran fine. The next day my son took it out and it ran fine. I went to take it out this weekend and sure enough. The dam thing wouldn't start. I pulled the plugs and got great spark, I put one plug and would get spark. Put the other in and nothing. I just think this boat hates the weekends. So I am in the process of getting to the stator to try the sandpaper. I have come to believe that Evinure/Johnson have been making a terrible product for years and people should not buy this garbage that they are selling. I am to the point where I am ready to remove this peace of junk from my boat and put it where it belongs. IN THE GARBAGE!!!

very un-nice way to talk about your engine, any wonder it doesn't work. These are old engines and need to feel loved:)
