i have a 1996 45hp evinrude outboard motor that starts jerking abruptly if it goes above 2000 rpm's. it sounds like it is starving for gas. the guy i bought the boat from says he replaced the fuel pump, and i replaced the fuel line, any ideas what this might be? i tried to clean the fuel filter screen, but i am not sure what the best thing to do that with is.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Is the tank venting properly?
If you squeeze the primer bulb when it starts coughing will it recover?

Tried spraying pre-mix from a bottle directly into the carb? This should tell if its fuel or ignition related.

TTOUCH459 I am in agreement with KEVINH make sure the tank is venting properly. I would use carb cleaner or something like it to clean the fuel filter screen.

Can you get it above the 2000-2500 RPM mark? If not sounds like its dropping into S.L.O.W. mode.
If it is not overheating, could be a bad temp sensor or powerpack problem.
