I have an old Johnson 3hp, from early 1950s. This little outboard has not been run for 25 years. The problem is no spark. Could it be a dead coil? Any suggestions? (The motor is not seized and is otherwise in good condition).

Certainly could be. If it's got no spark, it's got to be something under the flywheel anyway. All you have are points, condensors, coils and spark plug wires.
You need to use a flywheel puller. A harmonic balancer puller works well. I've got a beefy one I picked up at Princess Auto for the job. You'll also need three 1/4"-20tpi bolts 3" long. Do not use any sort of puller that works on the edge of the flywheel.
Nice 3hp tuneup article.

If the coils are cracked and broken, that's your culprit. You can order new coils (18-5181 x 2), points and condensors (18-5006 x 1) from iboats fairly cheaply. Also, you might want to try with The Marine Doctor in Saskatoon. He can get the same parts.

Tell us what you find.

PS - you can get a service manual from the local library, Iboats, or an original factory manual from one of the following places:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook

I'd bet coils. You have two on that motor.
