Re: 1981 Johnson 35hp lower unit
Hi 4uterry,
Either you're gotten a couple of bad luck lower units with defective gears, or there is someting common to the two lower units that has caused them to fail prematurely. I am not aware of any intrinsic defect in the 35hp lowers. I've seen lots of these in operations for many seasons without problems.
Many things can cause gears to fail prematurely - all preventable. Maintenance is number one - take care of them and they'll take care of you. Check the lower unit oil more than once a season. Use the recommended lower unit oil for your motor. Check condition of propeller - a bent prop can set up harmonics that can stress gears. Check shift adjustments - improper shifting can lead to premature clutch dog and gear failure. Check alignment of tower/exhaust housing - a bent housing can stress the driveshaft, and by extension, the gears.
You said previously purchased unit was "rebuilt" - by whom? A certified tech or a shade-tree mech? Not saying a shade-tree mech isn't a good mech, but sometimes the techs know stuff about their brand that the general wrench won't...
Good luck!
- Scott
