I have an 1984 Evinrude 225hp V-6 outbaord. It starts and idles fine, and revs fine with no load. Once I go out on the water put the engine under load, it feels like half the engine cuts out, then cuts back in. I've cleaned all the contacts in the ignition system wiring and repaired the ground from the stbd side power pac that looked suspect, but no change. Also, the tach works intermittently, and when I tested it, I had no signal coming from the gray tach lead out of the rectifier. I've ordered 1 new power pac and a rectifier, but any help in tracking down this problem, or shortcuts, would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Evinrude 225 power loss

I'm not sure if that model engine has the shift interrupter or not but when someone sez half the engine quits, that's what I think of. The shift interrupter is a switch that's located close to where the shift cable connects to the shift linkage. It's function is to momentarily kill the three starboard cylinders when shifting into neutral. If the switch gets out of whack, it can cause all manner of problems with cylinders 1, 3 & 5. Get back to us Prof, and tell us what ya find.

c/6
Hooty

Yea the shift switch was the prob when i had the same prob.
Did pull it out of its holder and the prob went away.
Now i have done some adjust on the linkage and put the switch back again.
No more prob.

There was no 225 in 1984. Lets get the model number so we're sure of what we're "looking" at.

I have a 1988 Johnson 225 that seems to have the same problem. I have been assuming a gas problem. Starts fine, runs good at very slow speed but when I give it gas, it bogs down (and will probably stall). Another problem is that the primer bulb doesn't stay hard. If I toy with it for a while, then it will run fine including full throttle. Next time I go to use it it may or may not bog down.

Once the engine iz primed and runnin', the bulb won't stay hard. There's just fuel flowing through it.

c/6
Hooty

Re: Evinrude 225 power loss

Thanks Hooty, went down that path after I posted.
I disabled the interruptor, no change. It turned out to be a bad stbd. side power pac, AND a bad rectifier. Engine's purring now! Now if I could just figure out how this guy wired in a momentary switch in his fuel guage circuit, I'd be golden! Dhadley, you may be right, but I asked for parts for an 84, and the parts I got fit, so who am I to split hairs, but I DO appreciate the extra effort to make sure we were all on the same page! Thanks folks, and any ideas on my fuel guage problem would be great!
