I have heard rumors about simply changing carbs on some Johnsons and thus increasing their HP. I have 1985 150 is there an easy way to increase the HP to say 175 or maybe even 200?

Those rumors pop out of the ground all the time, Forhim. The bigger carbs might increase hp some, but not that much. The HP difference is in the whole system, not some hotrod shop.

It would be cheaper and smarter to trade for a 200, then you would have a real 200.

JB, are there any easy and cheap ways to increase HP just a little. I dont have the money or the time to get a new/better motor so I am looking for easy ways to get more out of this motor.

PB

The cheapest way to get more power is to make sure your engine is running right. If it is already, I would look not at your engine but your boat setup. Check your trim. Raise your engine if possible. Check your rpm and prop selection. It is generally less expensive to buy a bigger motor than it is to increase the hp of the one you have. :p

Ditto, jimd.

Optimize your current set up. The results may surprise you.

jimd is right about setting the motor up correctly. That will make it run best.Aftermarket kits (various ones) are available. But now you are asking a 20 year old motor to do more work than it ever has.Keep it stock, set it up right, and enjoy it in it's old age.
DHP
