Who makes a good flywheel puller for Johnson and where can I get one? Roughly how much? I'm tired of tapping the nut and prying with a bar to pop them loose. Also is there a universal type one out there that can be used on other makes.

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

BC,<br />You can purchase a Harmonic Balancer puller from your local auto parts store and have change left from a $20.<br />Do yourself a favor, after taking the nut off and installing the puller, and after putting some tension on it, put a generous amount of penetrating oil on the shaft Let it sit overnight, if possible, and it should come off easily in the AM.

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

OMC (Bombardier now) makes a very good flywheel puller that comes with a handy handle and the proper bolts. My understanding is it costs around $70. Seems to be the slickest rig going.<br />To add to the good information Raboy is telling you, if using the harmonic balancer puller, you'll need a set of grade 8 1/4"-20tpi bolts around 3 or 4" long, since the pullers rarely come with that size. That should fit all Johnsons and Evinrudes. A few other sized screws will fit most Merc/Mariners, Yamahas, etc. It will not fit some large Mercury outboards. They use a very different style of puller. Also, buy the beefiest harmonic balancer puller you can find.<br />I myself haven't yet run into a flywheel mine can't pull. But when the day comes, I'll probably go buy the OMC one.<br /><br />Good luck!

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

As Raybo said, I just recently used a harmonic balancer puller that i bought at NAPA, about 10 bucks. It pulled my flywheel off my 140 hp with no problem. Had to buy the extra bolts as Paul said, a buck or two more. What I need or what do you all use to hold the flywheel while trying to turn the nut??

if you have access to air tools an impact on low works very well-no need to hold flywheel

87Aggie - For holding the flywheel, I've been doing evil shadetree stuff like filling a cylinder with rope or jamming the electric starter's pinion with a piece of aluminium. <br />Here is some better ideas:<br />Large strap wrench - seems to be the best bet for smaller engines. I've gotta get me one of those.<br />Automotive flywheel turning tool - used by Joe Reeves himself. Good for flywheels with ring gears.<br />OMC flywheel holding tool - $, but it works well naturally.

Probably not the best idea...or even good...but i jam a screw driver through a rivet and down inside whatever i can find....But still haven't been able to get the bolt off....awaiting a new ratchet set from ebay...apparently..adjustable pliers/vice grips won't cut it.<br /><br />How important is a torque wrench for reinstalling this bolt?

go to sears and get a strap wrench to hold the flywheel they are only like 10 buxs for a set of 2. that come on handy for alot of other things too.

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

I am the happy owner of a 1959 OMC flywheel puller. It works great. However,a harmonic balancer does the same job just as good. There is a trick to it though. Some people tighten and tighten that thing until the bolts start to stretch and bend, but nothing happens. The trick is to make it nice and tight and then take a hard rubber mall or even a hammer and hit the flywheel from below on one of its sides(not too hard)it usually pops up right there.

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

You can also buy just the needed flywheel puller parts, and not the whole expensive kit from Johnson/Evinrude. Your dealer can get the part numbers from a special tool book or a late model service manual.

Re: Need a flywheel puller.

68 wetboat asked "how important is the torque wrench in reinstalling the flywheel nut?"<br />All the manuals I've seen list the flywheel nut torque along with all other specs so it must be important. <br />That is absolutely, "THE" nut you don't want coming loose. :)
