Re: 35 hp selectric shift

Welcome to iboats.

The electric shift is simple enough, If you throw 12 volts to one wire, an electromagnet tightens a coil around the gear and locks it in that direction. If I remember correctly the Green wire is Forward and the Blue wire is for Reverse. It may be difficult to determine which is which after this many years of discoloring.

A car battery will work. The advantage of a marine battery is the thickness of the plates. Marine battery plates arethicker to tolerate the bouncing around boat batteries do.

You need a special gearcase lube I expect is still available thru a Jonhnnyrude dealer. If you have a box that mounts near the motor that all the main wires go into, there's something of a wiring diagram inside the cover.

To my knowledge there was never a 35hp with anything other than mechanical shift. The 35 was discontined in 1959 and selectric shift didn't appear until 1962.

Re: 35 hp selectric shift

i dont know what year it is but i believe that it is from the mid-late seventies.
Thanks for the help with the electric shift, i havent actually been up north to work on it yet but the advice will be really helpful.
WillyBWright: your explanation sounds simple enough, but just soo i dont blow somthng up i have to ask, do i conect the electromagnet wires direct to the battery "blue for forward green for reverse or vise-versa" plus your neutral wire, becasue my boat has an aluminum case on the left side, this is where all my wires connect too and it seems as though my battery feeds directly into a solonoid or transformeer or somthing of the sort, i dont know what.
thank you very much
