70HP VRO loads up at low speed

I have a 1986 70Hp VRO that I recently rebuilt the carbs with new kits, etc. The engine starts and runs fine at higher RPM's, but when at lower speeds such as idle throttle in gear it loads up really bad and dies. This makes it a pain to motor in a marina where there is no wake allowed :) . Anybody have any suggestions on adjustments or changes that I can make.

Thanks in advance.

I had that with my 65...I made sure the carbs were linked to open equally then idle timed it by feel.

Small posibility the VRO is over oiling.I've seen it on a couple motors.1987 70 HP had a problem, but not 1986.You can try trimming up when at lower speeds (less exhaust back pressure).

And make sure sync and link is done properly.
DHP

The VRO is disconnected on this motor and fuel is being premixed. What are your suggestions on how to do the idle timing? I checked the Sync and all looked well, all three carbs opened and closed simultaneuosly. I assume this is what you mean by sync?

Yes, open and close together exactly.
To idle time you need two people.
The help drives in gear at 700rpm while you adjust the rod that links the timer base and the throttle cam.
I tried to get it to idle at 4 degrees (with a gun)atdc but it would not.
So I did it by "feel" and now it is fine.
I didn't check but I think it's about tdc.
