Turn the high and low speed jets in until they seat-gently.

Back each out 1 1/2 turns and tune from there.

Thanks for the info DJ. However there is but one adjustment on the carberator that I could find.On top.
I unbolted the carb. from the motor and dipped it. After inspecting all the parts.... needle valve, old cork float ect.I found no reason to reattach and give it a yank.I did take your advice and set the only adjustment I could find at 1 1/2 turns out.did start :) but still not running properly.Runs for a second or two then dies.Pulled flywheel and now inspecting points flywheel shear key and so on. Ive never tore down an outboard motor. Hope this is not my first.
Mike.

Top adjustment is for the low-speed idle. Maybe it wasn't your adjustment in the beginning (coincidence?). Could be a clogged filter from a dirty tank, bad fuel pump, or even fuel line and/or bulb.

Re: '68' 20hp johnson

Thank you for the info bass2ply.... As it turns out I pulled the filter and much to my dismay... a very clogged filter from what appeared to be years of rusty gas and trash... Also after attaching a clear fuel line to the carb I found out that my fuel pump wasnt working either... Perrys had one for 20.00 and I am, to say the least, back on the river... Thanks a bunch!
Respectfully,
Mike.
