I have some fully synthetic 75w-90 gear lube, can I use it in my 65 hp 1990 johnson?

Re: Synthetic gear lube

I'd like to say the "official" answer is No. But if I had it sitting on a shelf and that was the only thing keeping me from going out in the boat, I wouldn't hesitate and I wouldn't worry about it. Marine gearlubes have additives that help hold water suspended in the oil so it doesn't settle to the bottom and rust things up for a reasonable amount of time. It will settle out over time. If your gearcase don't leak, it ain't a problem. If it does, then it could become one.
