Great forum! Have a 1986 90 Hp VRo Johnson. The tilt works up but not down. After searching the forum for help, I have concluded that the tilt motor is at fault as the relays click (one for up and one for down) and there is voltage at the connector to the tilt motor which reverses depending on whether the up or down position is selected. I tried banging on the motor when the down position was selected, but no luck. So...<br />1. Is the motor likely at fault?<br />2. When you use the manual release valve to run the motor down, the two smaller trim pins do not release...is there any way to release the pressure on those?<br />3. Some opinions in the forum seem to suggest that the tilt motor can be removed w/o removing the outboard. Do you guys concur? And do you have any guidance along those lines?<br />Really appreciate any advice offered!

its not the motor small pistons are for trim and won't go in manually<br />try switching relays problem should reverse itself<br />then replace one then the other note both relays must function for trim to go either way as they switch the negative side of wires

Re: Johnson 90HP 1986 trim problem

I swapped relays and the propblem did reverse itself as you said. I had previously removed one relay, and placed the other in its socket, and the motor continued to run just up, not down, Bit I mistakenly concluded that that exercise had proven that both relays were good. Didn't realize both had to function in order for the motor to run in either direction. You just saved me a whole lot of time and trouble as I had convinced myself that the motor was at fault. Thanks alot!
