Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD
Hiya & welcome,

even with a "regular" mechanical shift type of lower unit, often the prop will turn slowly if it's running in neutral... that's normal. It's because the drive shaft (from motor to lower unit) is always turning, and it is always engaged to the gears in the lower unit... the only thing that shifting gears does is slide the clutch dog on the prop shaft so it engages the lugs of the forward (or reverse) gear (which is spinning all the time). So... in neutral, the movement of the gears in the lower unit causes the gear oil to rotate which can slowly rotate the clutch dog & prop shaft, even though they're not mechanically connected. Anyway, maybe the same thing is happening when you crank yours over. If this is the case you should be able to hold the prop still (with a stick or something -NOT fingers!) while the engine is cranked over.

if it's an electric shift then, that's a different story (as Paul points out above)... the default is that they're in fwd, and need voltage (like as soon as it's started) they flip to neutral (at least from what I've read here).

good luck.
