Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

Please post your model number so we know what 85hp you've got.
If it's an electric shift outboard, then it's a possibility. The later ones were designed to go into forward gear if they lost electricity.

Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

Hiya & welcome,

even with a "regular" mechanical shift type of lower unit, often the prop will turn slowly if it's running in neutral... that's normal. It's because the drive shaft (from motor to lower unit) is always turning, and it is always engaged to the gears in the lower unit... the only thing that shifting gears does is slide the clutch dog on the prop shaft so it engages the lugs of the forward (or reverse) gear (which is spinning all the time). So... in neutral, the movement of the gears in the lower unit causes the gear oil to rotate which can slowly rotate the clutch dog & prop shaft, even though they're not mechanically connected. Anyway, maybe the same thing is happening when you crank yours over. If this is the case you should be able to hold the prop still (with a stick or something -NOT fingers!) while the engine is cranked over.

if it's an electric shift then, that's a different story (as Paul points out above)... the default is that they're in fwd, and need voltage (like as soon as it's started) they flip to neutral (at least from what I've read here).

good luck.

Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

It is an electric shift . On the engine cover it reads, Johnson 85hp Hydroelectric drive if that helps. The flywheel spins but the only movement I have is the slow turn of the propeller. Can U guys please help me fix it.

Thank You

Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

Please give us the year of the engine. That might make a difference. Your model number will have that incorporated into it. Help awaits.

Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

if the battery is charged and the the starter is going really slow, dissconnect the starter wire from engine and try jumping the starter from the battery directly.(jumper cables)if the starter is still going very slow try another starter. the winding could be grounding out.
i could be wrong but i think they did away with electric shift in 1972.your motor could be older than 1978. (does the motor start)

Re: HELP!! JOHNSON 85hp OUTBOARD

First, your engine are a 1969 model ( 85ESL69 = 1969 )
1969 was the first year the 85 hp came with the hydroelectric ( Type C lower unit oil only )
default gear is forward ( slips into neutral when it starts see Paul Moir´s & BF
´s post )

To get the best cranking speed you need :
Good batteri
Clean wires ( connectors )( any wires getting hot ??= replace them )
If you remove the plugs , do you get better speed ?( you shuld )
