I have a 1978 Johnny 115, and as far as I can tell there is NO voltage regulator.
Can one be added???
If so, how much will it cost & what part do I get. I don't have a problem wiring>>>I'm an electronics tech.
I see my voltage gauge reads 18V after crusing for a while & don't want to cook the battery. I also want to add some electronics that can't work over 17V.
Thanks for any help.
Jim

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Usually overvoltage on an unregulated charging system is caused by using a maintenance free battery or a battery of too small a capacity. Normally a group 27 works well on those motors, or another fix is to wire 2 batteries in parallel.

I believe the water cooled regulator from an early 1990's 90hp crossflow motor will fit your engine. They run about $80.

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Find out if there was a version of your block that had a regulator. I upgraded my 95 112 to a regulated system, and put a larger amp stator on also. both were standard on the 25inch shaft version of my motor. On mine, the regulator is water cooled. It mounts where a blind plate is on top between the two cylinder banks. There was a lifting eye there before I put the regulator in.

Boilermaker,

Have your dealer show you a #585195 regulator and see if it matches up with the water cover on the top aft of your cylinder block.

This is the one I mentioned in my previous post and the one MBB had installed on his 112hp.

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Thanks Guys!
I talked to my mechanic/OMC parts guy & he said the regulator would be A LOT more ($200+), then buying another battery and running in Parallel. I think I will pick up a battery & a Battery switch>>>this way I can run 2 batterys when running & switch to 1 battery when fishing & running my electronics>>radios & fish sounder, and have the backup.

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Did your parts person just look up in the book, or did he (or she) take the 585195 regulator to your motor to see if it would fit?

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Any water cooled reg/rec from a crossflow will work. You can use the one for the 35 amp system even if you have the smaller charging system.

The ones from a looper are a different shape and will not fit in the hole.

CDI and Pro Marine make new rec/reg's and are just under $200. They also make 10 amp ones and retail for less than $70. The 10 amp ones are replacements for the 585195 Seahorse mentions.

Re: Voltage Regulator???

Thanks Gents.
The mechanic was working on the engine when I asked about the regulator>>so he saw what cover was on the block.
DHADLEY>>>(hope life is getting back to normal)How many amps stator is in my 1978 115?
And why water cooled?? Aren't they just relays that disconnect the stator coil? Or do they have to absorb/dissipate all the energy from the charging coils into a resistor???
As always>>>THANKS for the continuing education of the BOILERMAKER ;) :D ;) :D ;)
