im looking at this old checkmate with an old evinrude 200 on it. the motor has low compression throughout (95 psi). would it be worht it to rebuild this motor? i can get the whole setup for $800. the motor does run, the boat just wont get above 40 mph. i could do the rebuild myself with the help of a friend so....... is there a set kit to rebuild one of these?
Whats wrong with 95 psi. Is that what it is on
all cylinders? Maybe it might just need a decarb.

If you like the boat, go for it. I think your lack of speed is elsewhere than rebuilding the powerhead. If compression is that even its probably OK.

Is that the 20' Checkmate?

The compression numbers depend on what heads it has and even which head gaskets. Gauges vary, proceedures vary, cranking rpm, starter condition and on and on. If its that even you probably have a good base to work from.

I'm with them. Decarb. As long as all the cylinders have the same compression it sounds like nothing has been hurt. What is wrong with 40? If it has been sitting for a while I would change the impeller in the water pump and clean the carbs. Sounds like a sweet deal.

what is this decarb you speek of. also, 40 doesnt sound right. a 200 o/b with a 19' boat should do 65+. i already have a 16' mate that does 55. i have a merc on it. i was just wondering if it would be a pain to go through this evinrude.

I would think you could get $800.00 out of the motor alone if you sold it.

It would not really be a pain to go through the motor just time, money and work. If it were mine though I'd see how it runs before turning my wallet upside down and shaking vigerously. The other post are right on.
