The problem is it will run out of fuel at idle I belive it does any way. You can hear the engine starting to lean out and the idel is erratic unless you pump the primer bulb then it will pick back up untill it runs out of fuel again. This engine runs great at WOT or at any RPM expect idle. This is the grocery list of repairs that have been made to solve this problem. Statring at the fuel tank pick up was removed and inspected for cracks or pluged screen, fuel lines replced from tank to primer bulb, fuel/water seperator filter replaced, spark plugs replaced installed QL78YC, carbs have been rebuilt. Hving said all that the VRO pump was replaced prior to having this idle issue because of a alarm going off, does any one think this maybe the problem? If so how can one go about checking the pump for proper opperation, is it vacumm operated I see there some wires going to it is this to power it or for the alarm? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You might have a small tear in the VRO diaphram on the gasoline side. You can dismantle the VRO with a torx driver of the proper size.

Hey Snookman...welcome to the forums.

Have you by chance noticed any fuel in the oil side after the rig has set a while? Or does it seem the VRO tank is getting full without adding any fuel? This would indicate a bad seal 'tween the oil and gas side of the pump.

The pump is run from the press/vac created by the block at #6 cylinder. Is your pulse limiter pointed the right way? (blue side toward the pump)

Make sure the pulse limiter connections to the pump are tight as well as all the connections to the pump.

An OEM manual would explain how to bench check the VRO pump using air pressure...(bicycle pump works for me). This would envolve removing the hoses from the pump or taking the pump off the rig. The links below are places to get a OEM manual.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/order_pre-1980.html

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

If you find anything or have any other questions, give us a post.

another thing you can do is to run the engine on a remote tank and see how it runs. if the engine runs good the problem is on the tank side not the engine. ps; let me know
