I've searched the forums and found that starters and recoils from the '58-6something 35-40 johnsons fit my 30 hp '56. Now I need to know about flywheels. Will the 35-40 hp johnson toothed flywheels fit a '56 30 hp johnson? Could there be balance issues etc? I need ot get this thing electric starting.

Jones, I don't think you'll have a balancing issue. Probally a worse time trying to find the parts. Best to check old marinas. Alot of times these old marinas hang on to these old motors for the parts. Might do a search on this site on past topics. One web site that comes to mind is twincitiesoutboard.

I got lucky, found a complete 62 28 hp donor for my old 56 30 hp just for hauling it off.

good luck.

hello
most of those old flywheels had a removable starter ring. all you need is the toothed ring not the entire flywheel.
if you were closer I still have a few old 28's out there that are locked up now:)
good luck and keep posting

you guys rock.

You know I looked at the bottom of the flywheel because I saw just the tooth ring on ebay, but there are no bolt holes on the bottom or the top. there are 4 holes in a row on one bottom edge but thats it.

Also, I AM finding parts at ebay, but with a parts # manual or some sort of compatibility chart I just don't know what fits and what doesn't.

Jonesy, Maybe a slim chance I might trade flywheels off my donor motor. Going to look at another rig this weekend with a 40 HP rude. Its supposed to be a good 40 HP. If it is indeed a good motor then I'll retire the 30 HP and might consider getting rid of some of the 28 HP parts.
Post back here or E-mail me. hastingh.murrel@sbcglobal.net
