The motor would not start. I checked fuel to carb, OK. Motor will run with starting fuel.
I took a part the carb, nothing plugged. Not sure what problem is, can some one help?

Re: Motor will not start

1st, stop using the starting fluid. It has no oil in it and that's a death sentence for a 2-stroke. Start using fuel/oil mix in a windex type spray bottle.

Does fuel ever reach the carb? I belive on your engine there's a little drain screw in the bottom of the bowl. Take it out - does fuel come out?

If it does, something got missed in the carb. Tear it down, soak it in carb cleaner and blow out all passages (particulairly the idle circuit) with compressed air or can o' air from Radio Shack. Rebuild the carb with a new carb kit from your local Johnny/Rude dealer. It's still available.

Tell us what you find!

PS - for the future, start your posts with your engine's make/year/hp or model number. I take it we're talking about your '67 Johnson 6hp CD-24 here.

Re: Motor will not start

I did get the motor running. There was a clog in the float bowl. But I still can not get it to run with low RPM's so I can shift. Also I was changing the prop seals and noticed that the gears are not affixed to the shaft. How does the prop shaft turn?

Care to tell us what engine you are working on, Santaman?

Re: Motor will not start

The clutch dog which slides between the two gears on the propshaft locks the gears to the turning of the shaft.
In neutral the dog is between both gears and not touching either, so both gears just spin on the shaft.
In reverse, the dog slides over and engages the gear nearest the propeller and prevents it turning freely on the propshaft (since the dog can't turn due to the splines on the propshaft). The forward gear continues turning in the opposite direction of the driveshaft.
In forward, the dog engages the gear away from the propeller and locks it to the turning of the propshaft. Often, you'll see a superior bearing arrangement on the propeller side, or 'reverse' gear since it is normally turning opposite to the propshaft. Afterall, the outboard is normally used in forward.

Hope that explains it!

EDIT - missed that other question. Have you tried adjusting the idle mixture control on the carb? Does it 'do' anything? If not, go after the carb again focusing in on the idle circuit. Poke clear the tiny idle orifaces in the carb's throat near the throttle butterfly. Be gentle with them though.

Re: Motor will not start

Thank You, The clutch dog was stuck and I just used liquid wrench to loosen it. Now it works great. Does anyone know the part# for the gear housing seal kit for this 1967 Johnson 6HP

On the idle circuit, I have cleaned it out, but when I adjust it nothing seams to make a difference. I was told that it was running fine 2 years ago, but is possible that the low idle needs to be adjusted?

Did you disassemble the carb, soak it overnight, blow it out with compressed air and put in a new carb kit?

I did disassemble the carb and soak it, but not over night. I also did not change the idle screws yet, but I did put all the new gaskets in.

Re: Motor will not start

Well I ripped the carb apart again. I soaked and blew it out again. I don't know what I missed the last few times, but it is now running like a champ. The lower end is back together and seams to be working fine. I have not taken it out on the water yet to find out how much power it has in it. Hopefully I will go this weekend. I want to thank everyone one this site. This is one of the best sites that I know and will tell everyone I know about it. Thanks again.
