98,115 Evinrude, fresh rebuild. Pushed out top crank seal, trashed upper crank bearing, stator and flywheel got together and made a real mess. Both are garbage now. This is where I stopped. Figure the cash value, should I go deeper or offer up a good parts source. Don't know if the seal was improperly installed or if the bearing went first, and pushed the seal from the temp spike. So,how bad could it be ?

Re: How bad could it be?

Hey tunnelrat, welcome to the iboats forums.

That's a hard nut to swallow, I'd say. Can you give us a little info on why the engine was rebuilt and what was done? How long did you run it before the melt down? You won't really know the extent of damage till you open her up. With nothing to support the upper end of the crank, the mating of the stator and flywheel isn't surprising. What you have to do is figure out why it happened.

Took a wave over the cowling, ingested water, then sat for a couple weeks. On the rebuild, replaced lower crank and rod bearings, scuffed the cylinder walls, replaced rings and gaskets as needed. This thing had about 4 hours on it from the shop that rebuilt it and I ran it about3 hours on the rack and may 3 more on the boat ( on muffs) and then maybe 5-6 minutes in the water, then without any fanfare it began to get tight,I turned for the dock and drifted up close enough to drag it by the bow line back in.

Overheat alarm sound or are you certain that it works? VRO checked out during rebuild and after, was it taking oil? Carbs overhauled at rebuild?

Re: How bad could it be?

I ran for about 3 hours total time on rack and 3 on boat verifying everything was good to go. I and my mech. looked this thing over for anything not up to snuff.New wiring harness,as I upgraded from a mid 80's 115 johnson. Temp alarm tested and worked properly. The carbs I broke apart and soaked, rebuilt, myself. Which is why I ran it so long on the boat, getting the carbs set right. We ran the engine on the stand to satisfy ourselves it was worth the time to replace what I had and then once on the boat I decided the carbs were just not as good as I wanted so then the rebuild and allot of running on the muffs to dial them in to what I wanted. This thing ran great on the stand and on the boat, but once I launched, it made it about 3-4 minutes at about 1/2 throttle. That's when I powered back to return to dock to pick up my mech.(I left him there in case he had to come get me ) When I made the power change I noticed a different noise, just a little squeal, ever so slight,I know now the stator and flywheel were screaming for help. Anyway I made it back and looked inside. It's a bad, bad feeling after all that work.

I hope your mechanic stands behind his work. It should be HIS problem not yours.

Re: How bad could it be?

This past June I coughed up #3 on a 84 Johnson,Looked bad enough and I didn't want to put more money into a twenty year old with mutiple afflictions so I went looking for a deal. I bought this engine from a small shop over in Annapolis. I looked it over as best I could and ran it on the rack before any money changed hands.
I'm not a gambler often but I did bet on this one and it appears I've bet on a losing hand. My mechanic advised me of what to look for and offered good advice all the way. I flipped a coin and now I'm biting the bullet. I took a chance with the full knowledge of the consequences. I'm waist deep into this thing and haven't yet decided which way to go. I've a complete shop capable of handling another rebuild assuming the block's OK and 25 years exp turning wrenches.Since 2 stroke engines are something I don't do every day I quess I'm looking for some insight as to what else to look for,so as to make the most informed decision as to which way to proceed. My mechanic says stop where we are.Part it out.Look for something else.I don't disagree completely but thought I'd look for an unbiased opinion. My mechanic, like most, is up to his neck in the shop and without saying so out loud I can tell he doesn't want or have time for the rebuild.I can understand,he's a small shop and there are higher profits to be made elsewhere with less time input and no warrranty required. It's mine, all mine. I made the the call to buy it and I'll suck it up and take the loss. Nobody but me to blame on this one.

Re: How bad could it be?

if you had scuffed cylinders and only replaced the rings ya got what ya paid for. a patchem up.
3 hours to dial in carbs is about 2 3/4 hours longer than it should take.
this is why i like doing this for a living
if you do it all and do it right it takes 15 min to prep it for seatrial and it all works from there.
like I say do it right do it once and it lives a long long life.
to many so called rebuilds are a poor attempt at saving money. but that is what keeps me in new shoes :)
post a bit more info on the rebuild before you blame the tech. although in my shop you either do it as per my specs or you take it down the road to "rusty bolt Bob and his can o crylon".
I have found over the years no one cares if I try to save them a nickle. they just beyatch if it breaks. those that wish to fix it right get a one year warrenty, those that dont take it to the next shop.
its just a policy

Hey rodbolt, thanks for taking the time the look over this. Your absolutely right this may very well be a patchem up. I've read some of your replys in this forum and believe you offer up some valuable
info.As far as the rebuild goes I can only repeat what info I was given on the engine. The 3 hours to dial in the carbs is allot longer than it should take. Took me about twenty min. to get them where I wanted them, but the engine did run about 3 hours on the boat with the muffs in about 2o min. intervals. My point was that the engine had run well for over six hours between the rack and on the boat before I launched the boat into the river and put a real load on the engine. As far as laying this on the tech,I don't think you'll find anywhere in this thread where I've done that.

Re: How bad could it be?

Tunnelrat, think I would seriously consider just getting a short block for it. Part out the block ya' got to recover a little money. Check in iboats store for an idea on price. Some places will pay core if you get a short block from them. Then all you do is put the electronics and stuff on the new block.

And one more thing....you don't dial in carbs on muffs. You do it on a test wheel, Dyno or best to do on the boat.

Re: How bad could it be?

tunnelrat
do it all or none.
that motor will run with no oil for 3 hours as long as its on the rack with no load.. if you wish to have your short block done with a warrenty or better yet drop your motor off, call Ron at rons marine. he specializes in OMC rebuilds. I will do it as well but it will be late jan or early febuary.
I dont mean to bust chops but I have found there are no "good deals" in my industry. sadly there are a lot of shady deals. I have a merc XR2 150 that a guy bought from ebay at the shop now. he paid 1800 for a good running engine that will cost another 2500 or so to make run correctly. he paid his money but good running 150 motors dont come along often for 1800.
however I have a 120 jonnyrude on my boat that may be forsale if you take the hull with ya :)
