I have a 1987 evinrude 200xp. The motor runs fine except when running wot and I hit the trim switch up or dwn the motor cuts out.All the electronics on the motor are new to include the wiring.I am thinking that it maybe a bad ground. Could someone steer me in the right direction?

Re: Motor cutting out when trimming up or dwn

Hello Blue...welcome to iboats.

Does the motor cut out right as soon as the Trim switch is pushed or does the motor move then cut out? Will it restart with out moving the motor from the position it stalled in?

Give this a shot....start the motor...don't have to be in gear, and start trimming up. If the motor stalls, look at the trim angle. Lower the motor and restart. Now, grab hold of the wire bundle going into the motor and start lifting up to approx. the trim angle the motor stalls at. If the motor stalls, the problem lays in the wire bundle where it goes into the pan. Maybe a wire rubbed bare and grounding out. And yes, go ahead and take a look for lose grounds.

Keep us posted of anything ya' find....

Usually it is a weak stator under the flywheel than "interupts" the ignition system when there is a heavy load on the charging system. Look closely at the black insulated coils on it and replace the stator if you see any plastic dripping from the coil on to the motor. Also use an ohmmeter and check for resistance and shorts.

The motor seems to cut out above 5000 rpms when trimming up or dwn.I have replaced the stator that seemed to be in good shape. But I have another one and will change it out and see if this will make a diff. It only cuts out under a load so the stator could be the problem. Thanks

Temporarily disconnect the black/yellow wire at the ignition switch, then go through the run engine, operate PTT scenario. If no change, disconnect that black/yellow wire at the powerpack(s).

If the problem is now non-existent, you are somehow throwing voltage to the black/yellow (kill circuit) wire at the ignition switch or the wiring harness. Having no idea of your rigs wiring schematic, that is a search you must make.
