Re: Stolen Outboard motor

1) File a police report and provide them with the make, model, & serial number. Picture if you have one. Think about any markings, dings, etc that would help you identify it.
2) Call your insurance agent.
3) Keep an eye on E-bay.
4) Check local pawn shops
5) Do a periodic on-line search for an engine of your make, year and model but don't use the serial number as it will likely have been removed anyway.
6) Don't hold your breath waiting for it to be returned but miracles do happen.

Re: Stolen Outboard motor

Hey Bob in Va! I wish you all the luck in the world in getting your engine back. I had the same thing happen to me up here in Canada and the Police here said these motors and the 20 hp are a hot item in the stealing list as they strip them down for parts and sell them. I never did get mine back. But better yet, I would like to get my hands on the people that steal them. Sure could teach them a lesson or to. We can always purchase a new or used engine but the invasion of privacy is something else to deal with. Good Luck

You never know Bob, it can happen that it might find its way back to you....a quad was stolen from the trailer park we frequent on the Canadian side of the border...just read in the trailer park newsletter that the culprit was apprehended just over the border in Montana 4 months later...and the quad was returned to its owner.

Good luck!

Run an ad in the paper wanting to buy a 9.9 and see who calls.

Re: Stolen Outboard motor

Does anyone know if BRP is taking stolen outboard serial numbers like OMC did? You would send a copy of your police report and serial/model numbers to their warranty dept. Presumably if they ran the numbers when brought in the service, they would see it was stolen and call in the coppers. (?)

Re: Stolen Outboard motor

I like fireman57's idea of running an ad, but I'd wait a bit to let the thief think things have been forgotten and the insurance company has bought you a new engine. That engine may change hands a couple of times in between but the trail could lead back to the thief. You might also stop at your local grocery store and put a wanted ad on their bulletin board.

Hey Bob, take a trip one day when you have some time, down to the nearest boat launching facility near you, and kick back and watch people come in, you might find it that way........

Bob
Hate to hear about your engine. This was so bad hear that the laws have changed making it hard to buy/sell/trade a boat and/or moter. Though it still doesn't aply to anything 10hp or smaller. Hope you get it back!

Sorry to hear about the engine Bob. Hope you have the serial number wrote down somewhere. Ya' never now about getting it back. Could happen. Lots of folks here on the forums.

Might even post the model and serial number here. We have several wrench's here that own shops. Who knows....the engine just might blow into one of them.

Re: Stolen Outboard motor

Thanks guys for all the support. I have called a few pawn shops and made some online ads looking for a motor. I can't find the serial number rightnow but i am trying to get a hold of the shop i bought it from. They may still have it on file.
I hope i can get more info soon.
Would it be a good idea to post more info about the engine? Looks, parts, stuff like that?

Re: Stolen Outboard motor

Bob, sorry to hear about your engine. A friend of mine had his new nissan outboard stolen from a lake in upstate ny. We live on long island ,ny. Three days later he saw the same size nissan outboard advertised in the local paper. He called and the description fit his engine. He notified the police and a plain cloths officer went with him to the guys house. Sure enough it was his and the guy had another stolen outboard as well. He was arrested... Anyhow this guy advertised it right away so don't hesitate. This story had a happy ending. Hope your's does too. good luck...
