howdy all. i just picked up a 1984 19' Renken
with a 115hp OMC seadrive and i was wondering
what type of oil to use for the fuel mix. i read
a post on here that said i could use auto motor
oil since it's a 4 banger but just thought i'd
double check that info before i toss in 10w30 &
create a problem. i'll have a few more Q's for ya
after i find the bugs... :D

TIA

Re: Correct oil for 115hp OMC seadrive

I hope yer jokin' about 10W30.......
The 115 seadrive requires 50:1 TC-W3 2-stroke outboard oil ONLY.......16oz oil to 6 gal fuel.
It's a 4 banger because it's 4 cylinders, but 2-stroke...it's not a 4-stroke.
Good thing you came here before trying auto oil.... :D
Welcome aboard.
I would highly recommend a water pump change and a new set of sparkplugs (Champion QL82C's).

Re: Correct oil for 115hp OMC seadrive

thanks guys, i guess i'm showing my newbieness
with outboards.. :D . i assumed 4 stroke & 4
cylinder was interchangable. i got the auto oil
from this quote in the FAQ section..."Four stroke
outboards are a whole different story. Again,
users should stay within the limits set by the
warranty. Automotive oils are generally suitable"
good thing i don't do anything until i'm
absolutely sure i'm doin' it right. (well, usually :D )
i did a 30 second test run this morning with the
fuel still onboard & she fired right up. i bought
the boat/motor from an outboard repair guy &
he 'said' he kept her in good repair (& it looked
like it too)
thanks for that link to the manual, i've been all
over town trying to find one & all i was getting
was the sales pitch for a new motor..

hmmm, i just checked out the motor for the
serial/model #'s to get the manual & it says to
use champion plugs # L77J4 & not QL82C.
do you guys know where i can go online to verify
my HP? (it's no longer on the engine cowling). if
it helps the model # is 2BBLCRA & the serial # is
J807026.
thx

When you fired her up this AM did you have the flushette hooked up? (Was water getting to it?)

yes, i had water coming out of two small holes in
the lower unit with just the water pressure. i
didn't want to leave the helm in case it kicked
into gear, so i still need to check it out to see
if the water pump is working. that's about to
happen now that my little helper is home from work.

L/QL77JC4's are fine, but the QL82C is the updated plug recommended for these V4's and a few others.

Re: Correct oil for 115hp OMC seadrive

WaterOtter - The hp rating for the SeaDrives is elusive for some reason. My 1987s are 110 hp per the OMC shop manual. I can't speak to the 1984s. I would suggest that you get the parts catalog as well. The diagrams are excellent. By the way for mine there were two different shop manuals. One for the model with hydraulic steering and one without. Not a big deal but I got the one without and of course I have the hydraulic steering.

SoLittle, ya, i'm finding that out. i talked to
the tech guy at the link you posted & he's telling
me i may have either a 1.6 or 2.0 liter engine
with either a 120hp block or a 140hp block (??)
i should know more today...

p.s. i did the second test run last night & the
water pump appears to be working fine. (yay!)

Re: Correct oil for 115hp OMC seadrive

Your tech is a bit confused. A 1.6 liter (your motor) is a crossflow. A 2.0 is a looper. A 120 block is a looper. A 140 block can be either a looper or a crossflow. 120 and a 140 looper blocks are identical.

Just get the manuals for the model number you gave and you'll not go wrong.

I had an 89 1.6 liter. At first I thought it was 120 hp but later found out it was 110. I'm not sure it makes much difference unless you get one of those repair manuals that covers Johnson/Evenrude/OMC several models and years then you probably need to know the hp. Anyway it is a crossflow V4.

My 1987s are 1.6 liter crossflows @ 110 hp.
