I had my boat in the garage for 6 months Took out and added fresh gas to the tank.Motor is 1989 Gt 150 it starts fine and idles fine but when pushing the throttle down it dies If I push the choke at the same time while pushing the throttle it will take hold and run great. But when I come back to a idle and try again I have the same problem .So do I remove and clean carburetors and is this a job that I could do? Or is Major and needs a pro to do it.I guess I should replace the fuel filter first to see if that helps since it acts like it starving for fuel But it runs great at high speeds.need help.

Hi puffen....anytime ya' need to choke it to get gas, you got a problem in one or more carbs or you have a leaky fuel line. I would really advice to clean/rebuild the carbs before running it again and check all your fuel lines. Replace any that have gotten stiff and have lost their flex. Double check all connections are tight. And don't forget the fuel line from the tank. You still running with the VRO hooked up?

What OBJ said;but before diving into it get a manual on your motor, it will give you a step by step on rebuilding the carbs.Good luck

and, if the gas had no stabil (or other) you may want to change the gas out. (no I am not saying get ride of the fuel, use it in the lawn mower, the old truck/car etc, some thing with a 4 strock engine, costs to much to not use) but most here agree old gas is not good for a 2 cycle engine.
just a thought, good luck

Re: Cleaning Carburetors

Thank you for your reply rwise. I did add a stabilzer to the fuel befor Parking But I have to mix my own oil since my VRO is not working. And think that make it worst as far as the old fuel goes.I am going to get a repair Manual and try and clean my carbs with new kits .The shop wants $360.00 to do the 3 carbs.SInce I am not a outboard Mech. I will take shots with my digtal Camera for linkage hook up and etc.

If you are going to give it a shot, do get the OEM manual as river runner suggested. Probably the hardest part is just getting into the carbs...after that, not bad. Soak the carbs in carb cleaner and follow up with spray carb cleaner through all the passages and follow up with compressed air. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks OBJ!! On the carb cleaner do you use the same as auto carb cleaner Or is there a special one .Someone said the car spray cleaner for your car is not good for marine use is this true? as you can see I am not up on working on outboards but I do like being able to do my own work plus saving money of course.

You can use auto carb cleaner on the metal parts, but keep it away from the plastic stuff. Be sure to use compressed air to clear all of the pickups and passages when your done soaking like OBJ says.
Good luck

Re: Cleaning Carburetors

It may be the fuel pump diaphragm. It can lose prime at low speeds but work otherwise. Choking and pumping the primer bulb will get it primed and then it works. The diaphragm can look ok but still be porous so don't be fooled (as I have) if your looks ok.

I would pull the carbs off as a way last resort. They aren't difficult to work on but lots more work than pump diaphragm or checking other fuel delivery systems...hoses, filters, connections.

when you rebuild the carb make sure to gap the floats just like the book tells you or you will be doing it all over again it is simple. I didn't know a thing untill i had problems and had to get the book. you can also get that book from the library
