I have a Johnson 1964 5.5 hp cd-21a. I just got my carb re-build kit, there are two small silver discs included that I think according to my exploded diagram is an expansion plug. Am I correct? What is an expansion plug? My Seloc manual mentions nothing about this, should it be removed for a proper carb repair? This is my first carburator rebuild on any type of motor so there may be more questions to follow. Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: carb repair

They are "welch" plugs and are used to cover the holes drilled for Idle circuts in most cases, and yes, to do it properly, you should remove the old ones and clean through-out, and install the new ones with a punch or flat, blunt object about 1/2 the diameter of the plug.
You have to be careful removing the old plugs due to the proximity of the carb body under it.
A 10-penny nail sharpened at an extreme angle works good. Drive or "Tap" it into the old plug at about a 70-75deg angle just enough to puncture the plug and pry down with the nail (up with the tip)just be careful not to penetrate too far...just enough to let the nail grip the plug.

Re: carb repair

The most troublesome passages are underneath those plugs. It's a very good idea to remove them to inspect & clean.
They're not difficult to pop off and replace. I like to coat the new plugs in sealer before installing them, just to be certain.

Re: carb repair

The manual calls for 1000 sealer but any gasket sealer will work. I've used permatex #3 applied very thinly (with a q-tip) and that worked too.
You don't want anything thick enough that there would be a possibility of a bit of goo breaking off and cloging things up down the road. Also, since it needs to be fuel proof, any sort of silicone is out.

Thanks Paul, You guys are great. I wish you all were here to kick me in the @#%@ to get me going. I'm still a little gun shy. But I got more time than money.

If I had a nickle for every dumb-arsed mistake I made wrenching my first outboard, I would have.. like.. a buck fifty, maybe more. :)
You're doing a lot better than that!
