1981 35hp Johnson

I've got a lower unit problem(I think Clutch Dog). When dropping lower unit, where do you disconnect the shift cable. I've looked everywhere and can't find it. Other Johnsons I've worked on are under carbs. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't remember where the cut-off year is, but if it's early style there will be a small oval-shaped access plate on the side of the motor leg that, when removed, reveals a brass coupling. Remove the bottom bolt from the coupling and the shift rod is disconnected.<br /><br />If it's a later style it'll have a black plastic intake grate on the side of the gearfoot. Remove the grate (both sides) and undo the compression fitting hidden behind it. Be careful as there are small pieces involved with the compression fitting.<br /><br />- Scott
