Torque specs - 1979 Evinrude 15 ?

Am taking the cylinder head for my 79' Evinrude 15 in to have a plug hole helicoiled tomorrow and need to know how much to torque the bolts to when I reinstall the cyl. head. Also will be replacing the impeller so need the spec on the lower unit bolts. Have a factory service manual on the way from e-Bay but it won't be here til Wednesday or Thursday. <br /><br />Thanks in advance - Dave

Was told 8-10 ft lbs - does that sound right?

Hi Dave,<br /><br />Crankcase to cylinder bolts - 12-14 ft lbs.<br />Cylinder head bolts - 18-20 ft lbs.<br />The flywheel, if you've removed it, is 45-50 ft lbs.<br /><br />That's from Johnson's own manual for your motor.<br /><br />Hope it helps. Great little motors!

Thanks, stillfishing<br /><br />you sure you haven't got those ratings switched around? 18 to 20 ft lbs for the cyl. head bolts seems kind of high - I have an old book that has specs for the 9.5 Evinrude and it says 96 to 120 inch lbs which is roughly 8-10 ft lbs, I believe.

The 9.5 cylinder head bolts are only 1/4 inch. I believe the 9.9 and 15 had 3/8 inch. Anyway the 1980 manual has the same spec as stillfishing's manual.

AS a thought how important the correct TORQUE is . I had a old 35 hp elect Johnson, giant old white and gold thing. After buying my 3rd flywheel key the parts guy stopped me and asked if I was reselling them. It turned out they need? 90 to 120# of torque on a 1/2" or 5/8" nut. "NO way I said." He was right. No more key sales.

Seller said, "It runs great!" Sellers always say that. I'm waiting for the temperature to get above 40 here so I can check it out.<br /><br />I forsee many trips to Twin City Outboard in my future....
