Given the high price of genuine CD ignition units, are there any alternatives such as auto units?

If so, which auto units work and what motors do they fit?

I'm interested because it'd be nice to buy a motor that can take a cheap alternative rather than one that is stuck with the genuine and expensive one.

None that I've heard of. I've heard rumor that there's something automotive out there for Amplified electronic ignition, but nothing for CD.

I've found good, used ones off eBay for cheap. You're taking a small risk, but for the most part, powerpacks are pretty reliable pieces of electronics. They tend to go bad when abused in some way (ground goes bad, wiring is hooked up backwards, etc.) so if you get one off a running motor that has blown up, you are probably going to be good to go...
Might also be worth a trip to the local outboard boneyard for the same...
- Scott

I was quoted $249 for a powerpack for my motor at a marine shop in Perth. But, I found an aftermarket Sierra unit at www.boatfix.com in the USA and had it flown to Perth for a total cost (Powerpack+Postage) of $60.
