Hello again,

I was shopping around for a new water pump replacement. I found one on E-bay for $39.50 with free shipping and it is brand new and complete with all the parts. It is a Sierra part number 18-3392. My question is is this a good deal? Would it work on a 1989 Evinrude SPL 88 horsepower model number E88MSLCER serial number R08158562? If I buy this will I have to modify this pump or can I remove the old water pump and just install the new Sierra water pump without doing any modifications because it is not an original Evinrude OMC part.

Bubba How much is a real OMC/BRP kit ?I'd guess about $12.00 more and you won't have to worry about 'making it fit (work)'.

DHP

I have a 1988 88SPL and bought the water pump kit for about $56 from a dealer. The kit contained all new parts associated with the pump. I also purchased the original parts and shop manual from I think Ken Cook Co. That set me back $116 but it is a real eye opener compared to the Clymer manual. If you think your going to keep this motor for a while and want to work on it yourself, thats only 2 hours of dealer labor. I'd buy the kit/box.

and when it does not fit or fails and wipes something out, e-bay is rather difficult to ask questions or obtain replacements or warrenty work.its been my observation for the past 30 years that "good" deals are very rare in this industry.

O.K. not a problem I am a amatuer at the boating thing. I just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I am going to buy the original Evinrude brombadier omc water pump kit here at my local marine dealer Cope Marine. I called for for the price and it is $57.90 so that is what I am going to do. I told them I needed part number 5001594 I believe off of the top of my head. I haven't taken the lower leg unit off yet. I have been working alot. Last weekend I tore out the old carpet and started putting in my new carpet. I bought it from Lowe's the really nice plush dark blue marine carpet. I am 95% completed with the install will finish it up the weekend. Then I am going to paint the engine cowling. Then I will tackle the water pump replacement, I am still a little leary about it especially the shift linkage removal. Then I will replace the lower unit oil. I want to be ready when the season begins.

I am really dying to crank her up but scared especially living on an military installation. Don't want to make anybody mad at me, but hate to pull her too a lake and something isn't right.

just do it between 0600 and 1800 and no one should complain. do they have a base hobby shop there ? most navel bases here have a hobby shop to work on cars and such.

Yes, there is a base hobby shop here at Scott AFB Illinois. I have used it to replace a plastic upper manifold assembly on a 1995 Pontiac Transport minivan due to it leaking antifreeze out, my first change and have had no leaks since. Hopefully the water pump change on boat will be as good.

Hey Bubba, if noise is an issue, running the motor in a over-sized barrel is much quieter than muffs. The water level should be a few inches above the water intake, or nearly half way up the middle section if you can manage it.
