Does anyone have information on how to adjust the idle on this motor? The "rich/Lean" adjuster works fine and the throttle handle operates fine, however the knob at the end of the throttle that allows you to adjust the idle speed doesn't seem to do anything. Could it be broken? How can I tell if it is.. any proceedures, documentation, or diagrams to view would be quite helpfull...

thanks
Paul

Hi Paul,
All the knob in the end of the motor does is set how low the throttle handle will turn, which in turn limits how slow the motor will idle down. If you want to adjust the smoothness of the idle, you need to work on the "rich/lean" knob. That knob should be no more than 2-full turns from closed and no less than 1/2 turn from closed.
Start with the knob at 2-full turns counterclockwise from closed. Turn it inwards, very slowly, stopping at about 1/8-turn intervals to allow the motor to smooth out. The motor RPMs will pick up as you close it, until it starts to drop off noticeably. Back it back about 1/8 turn from that drop off point. It's best to adjust it with the knob off, then once you find the "sweet spot" and snap the knob back on, centered between the stops.
- Scott

One other thing... do this with the motor in gear, on a boat. Don't try to adjust it in a barrel...
- Scott

The rich/lean knob is already set correctly as a little left and it starts to run rough, then a little right and the same thing happens.. The accelleration and smoothness of the motor is reasonable, however, it wont idle slowly... no matter how I try to use the throttle to slow her down or fiddle with the +/- idle speed knob...

I eventually fiddled withthe set screw on the cam that pushes the throttle open under the flywheel, but I think that was just to compensate for a fault in the throttle handle somewhere... I think the throttle handle has something broken in it as the +/- has no effect.

Paul

Re: 4.5hp 1980 Evinrude outboard

I have the same motor, the plus minus ring has zero effect for me as well. When I asked what that was for earlier I was told it what the fast/slow idle control, but that didn't make sense with the rich/lean idle control knob.

Mine does idle down nicely, I need to get it in the water on the boat to check the under load settings for the idle control.

Also need to find an oil that doesn't smoke as bad - Envinrude's oil smokes pretty good at 50:1

As I recall the +/- wheel never seemed to have much effect.
Try adjusting it when the twist grip throttle is advanced a little.

Ed thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that...

I am, however curious in how it works in there... does anyone have any diagrams they can send me?

It works just like a water valve - it's needle shaped to allow better regulation in the flow, but essentially it's the same thing. I belive this carb matches yours pretty well, and might give you some idea:

A service manual will show/explain it better I'm sure. :)

Re: 4.5hp 1980 Evinrude outboard

I appreciate the responses so far, however I am looking for details of the twist grip throttle located on the tiller handle. Particularly the idle +/- adjuster...an exploded diagram of this would be very helpful for me to look at prior to me tinkering with it...thanks

Paul
